You Are So Faux Fancy

Faux Fancy is a term that I coined initially as a derogatory term to describe people who try too hard to impress. Like huge fake plantation style homes “faux fancy.” Wearing clothes, shoes or handbags saturated in logos, Yuck! Thou dost try way too hard…faux fancy.  However, as I take a good hard look at myself from time to time, I see that I have much in common with the above offenders, but I would like to think I’m more subtle with my fakery.

* I love to thrift, and it is by far my favorite way to have fancy without the fancy price tag.  And here are some helpful hints.

First of all, I can generally tell if something is expensive by the detailing. For example: how does the fabric feel, are there any extra details like fancy buttons or other unique additions. Quiet luxury is what real luxury is all about and it doesn’t scream, it whispers. I also use ebay as a tool to see if the item might have value. But even if it doesn’t have resell value if you like the thing it can always be dressed up.  I often will wear a whole outfit that has been thrifted but pair it with nice shoes and a cute bag.

* There are plenty of cosmetics and skin treatments that are worth the splurge but there are also many that can be found over the counter at a fraction of the cost and with what you save you can spend guilt free on a few units of Botox. In the future, I would like to spend more time on this topic.

*I never skimp on shoes because quality footwear has lasting power plus, they are more comfortable.  Cheap shoes hurt my feet. It doesn’t pay to be faux fancy here just go fancy in this category.

*A good handbag is important, and leather is always the gold standard here.  Personally, a brand name here is low on my list of requirements.  How does it function and what does it look like are the only things I consider.  An understated handbag goes into the quiet luxury category. Besides, because most people are looking for flashy, logo driven bags, you can usually pick up a great bag on Poshmark, ebay or local thrift. Stores.  Check out consignment stores too.

So…I will explore these topics in detail in future posts! I have lots of fun ideas!
